Targeted Antibiotic Therapy

ARESTIN

A precise antibiotic placed exactly where stubborn gum infection lives — and nowhere else. The right tool for a small set of periodontal cases.

What ARESTIN is

ARESTIN is the brand name for minocycline hydrochloride microspheres — a powder-fine antibiotic preparation that we place directly into a deep periodontal pocket after a scaling and root planing. The microspheres release medication slowly over about two weeks, killing the bacteria that drive bone loss in that specific spot.

Unlike a systemic antibiotic pill, ARESTIN does not pass through your bloodstream. It works only where it is placed. That is important: it gives us a targeted tool without the broader impact of an oral antibiotic.

When we recommend it

ARESTIN is an adjunct, not a stand-alone treatment. We may suggest it after a deep cleaning when:

  • A few pockets remain 5 mm or deeper after scaling and root planing
  • You have isolated stubborn sites that are not responding to routine maintenance
  • You are at higher risk because of diabetes, smoking, or family history of periodontal disease
  • We are trying to avoid escalating to periodontal surgery for limited problem areas

For mouths with healthy pocket depths, ARESTIN is not needed. We do not place it as a routine add-on.

What the appointment looks like

Placement takes only a few minutes per site. After your cleaning, we dry the area, gently insert a small applicator into the pocket, and release the microspheres. There is no numbing required for most patients. You should avoid brushing that area for 12 hours and flossing it for 10 days while the medication does its work.

At your next maintenance visit, we re-measure those pockets to see how much improvement we got. The combination of a thorough deep cleaning plus targeted ARESTIN typically reduces pocket depth more than cleaning alone.

Side effects and considerations

ARESTIN is well tolerated. The most common side effects are mild — minor tenderness at the placement site for a day or two. Patients with a tetracycline allergy should not use it, and we will ask about that before recommending it.
