Caring for your smile while living on the lake

Life at Smith Mountain Lake comes with sun, water, and weekend snacks the kids talk about for days. The same things that make lake life wonderful — long days outdoors, sweet drinks, sticky s'mores by the firepit — can also wear on your smile if you're not paying attention.

The good news: a few small habits keep your teeth in just as good shape as your dock lines.

Hydrate with plain water, not just sports drinks. Smith Mountain Lake summers are hot. Sports drinks and lemonade are full of acid that softens enamel. Plain water rinses sugar away and keeps you hydrated for the next swim.

Pack a soft-bristle toothbrush for boat days. A quick brush before you head back to the dock at sundown clears the day's snacks off your teeth before they have time to settle in. No need for a full dental kit — just a brush.

Wear a mouthguard for waterskiing, wakeboarding, and tubing. A custom-fit guard from our office is comfortable, low-profile, and protects against the surprisingly common chip-or-crack you don't see coming until you do.

Watch the wine and the lemons. Boat afternoons often involve both. Sip with food, rinse with water afterward, and wait 30 minutes before brushing — your enamel needs that window to re-harden.

Don't skip your six-month visit. Living on the lake doesn't mean driving an hour for a cleaning. We're right here at Westlake Corner, with Saturday-adjacent hours that fit weekenders and full-timers alike.

If you have questions about how to keep your teeth healthy while still enjoying lake life the way you want to, that's exactly the conversation we love having at your next visit.
